Rio Ngumoha’s post-match interview following his 100th-minute winner against Newcastle has gone viral, with supporters reacting to the youngster’s delight. The 16-year-old was introduced in second-half stoppage time and scored to become the Premier League’s fourth-youngest goalscorer in history, trailing only James Vaughan, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney.
Much has been made about the starlet’s potential well before this season, with Ngumoha shining at the youth level last year and making an impression on the Reds’ pre-season tour this summer. While his talent has not been questioned, it appears that neither has his mentality, as admirers have all made identical comments in response to his milestone moment.
Ngumoha’s Viral Post-Match Interview.
While Ngumoha was not permitted to talk with external broadcasters following the game, he did give an interview to LFC TV, and his delight at what he had just accomplished was evident on his face.
“I’m buzzing,” the teen concluded. “I’m overjoyed to score, especially the winner. What a great moment. “Special feeling.”
The child went on to reveal how he was brought into the fold and what was stated to him prior to his introduction:
“That was crazy. He just glanced at me and motioned, like, ‘Quickly, get ready.’ You simply need to come on and make an impression. Thank God, I did it. All of my teammates urge me to beat my man or take them on if the situation calls for it. But I have to switch it up sometimes because if there are two guys, there could be a pass or a one-two that puts me in a scoring position.
“Normally, coaches say, ‘Make the back post.'” So the fact that I was able to make the back post was unbelievable. Mo and Dom put it through his legs, and when I was one-on-one, I smashed it. Dom already knew I was there. He even spoke to me in the changing room. As the ball approached, I simply backed myself to score. I don’t even know; it’s insane.”
The wholesome exchange has since gone viral on social media, with an enormous positive response to Ngumoha’s words, and especially his answer.
“So calm, confident, and well-spoken, especially for such a young man. Credit goes to his parents and family. “He’s going to be a star, isn’t he?” commented one fan, while another added: “Lovely moment. Good questions, and Rio comes across as modest, thankful, and honest. Seems extremely grounded and delighted to have the opportunity to play for this club.”
A third remarked, “I’m so accustomed to watching lobotomised PR-trained interviews, this is so, so nice to see someone being themselves after a game like this,” while a fourth said, “Bless his little face, you can tell how happy he is, the dream! Enjoy it; more will follow; hard work begins now.”
A fifth wrote, “He’s going straight to the top. Got faith in Sturridge,” with a sixth saying: “He’s not only a tremendous talent, but he also appears to be a very mature and humble person.” In this interview, he emphasizes not getting carried away by the hoopla.
The response, however, was arguably best summed up by one final comment that simply stated: “What an interview – 16 years old. “He is buzzing.”
Ngumoha’s goal made even more history, as he became the second-youngest debut goalscorer in Premier League history, after only the aforementioned Vaughan. And, while his reaction was joyous, it was far more relaxed than Jamie Carragher’s subsequent celebration, which included rushing around the Sky Sports studio.
