Anthony Gordon issued an emotional speech after being sent off in Newcastle’s 3-2 loss to Liverpool on Monday night. Jamie Carragher labelled Gordon as one of the greatest players on the pitch throughout the first 45 minutes, prior to his departure for a lunging tackle on Virgil van Dijk, which ultimately lost the hosts the game, which they dominated for huge sections of.
Alan Shearer, Carragher, and Thierry Henry, who were reporting the game for Sky Sports, were among many who heavily criticized Gordon for his challenge. Gordon has now come out for the first time, sending an emotional message to Newcastle supporters.
Gordon’s Emotional Statement After Red Card

Gordon apologized to Newcastle fans for the red card and explained that his actions were motivated by a desire to bring excitement to the game, since the Magpies had maintained a strong push throughout the first period.
The statement reads:
“I truly apologies to my teammates and fans. My motives were pure. I was simply trying to get some enthusiasm in the game, and I mistimed the tackle. I’d also like to apologize to Virgil. I would never intentionally tackle someone like this. We spoke afterwards, and he is aware of this.
“More significantly, I’m very proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we performed tonight. What makes SJP unique is the atmosphere created by all of you. I adore everything our club stands for, especially right now. I’ll be back and better, just like every other setback I’ve encountered. “See you soon.”
Gordon’s comments about speaking with Van Dijk about the challenge came after the Dutchman stated that he couldn’t believe the initial ruling on the challenge was simply a yellow card.
“Well, I told him that if this isn’t a sending off, I don’t understand football,” the Liverpool captain admitted.
“So, I thought it was weird that the referee needed to go to the monitor. But, sadly, such things happen in football. Whether you intended it or not, it happened. “We move on.”
Gordon, who has been operating as a replacement striker with Alexander Isak out of the squad due to links with Newcastle’s opponents on Monday, will miss at least three games as a result of the straight red card, including travels to Leeds and Bournemouth, as well as a home match against Wolves.
