The Arsenal striker sustained an injury during the Premier League opener against Manchester United.
Arsenal player Kai Havertz might face a lengthy layoff after a tragic report revealed the severity of his latest injury.
After Arsenal signed top target Viktor Gyokeres earlier in the summer window, questions arose over Havertz’s role this season.
Last season, the German international played 36 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions, despite missing several months due to a hamstring injury.
Although Gyokeres took his spot in the starting lineup for Arsenal’s season opener against Manchester United, Havertz came on to the pitch for a 30-minute appearance in the second half of the contest.
However, things did not go as planned for the striker, who sustained a knee injury that, according to a recent source, may require him to take another lengthy absence from football.
After missing the majority of the second half of last season due to a hamstring strain sustained at a training camp in Dubai, Havertz was undoubtedly keen to return to action once he had fully recovered.
However, a knee injury acquired during his cameo at Old Trafford means he will need additional time to rehabilitate, with German publication BILD reporting that he could be sidelined for a while before returning to the pitch.
According to the report, Havertz’s current treatment strategy consists of two weeks of conservative therapy and medical injections as club doctors attempt to control the issue.
However, if this fails, Arsenal will have to accept the possibility that the 26-year-old would be sidelined for another long period of time, with the problem perhaps requiring surgery.
With Gabriel Jesus also out recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, Havertz’s departure leaves Arsenal light up front, with Mikel Merino expected to be Gyokeres’ backup for the foreseeable future.
Despite this, with little over a week until the summer transfer window closes, Arsenal are unlikely to recruit a new forward to replace Havertz, especially after recently signing Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.
