Chelsea Give Portion of Club World Cup Bonus Fund to Family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva

Chelsea will donate a percentage of its Club World Cup earnings to the families of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. The Blues were the surprise victors of the US-hosted event in July, defeating Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final.

Their win in the redesigned competition netted the club an estimated ยฃ84.4 million, making it the most profitable event in club football despite previously being regarded as little more than a glorified mid-season friendly. Chelsea has since authorized a ยฃ11.4 million sum to be divided evenly among the players that represented Enzo Maresca’s team during the championship game.

According to The Athletic, the club and players have also agreed to provide an equal contribution to Jota and Silva’s families following their untimely deaths during the summer, which prompted tributes from all over the world.

The total value of each portion exceeds $500,000 (ยฃ368,000) before currency translation charges from US dollars to UK pound sterling, as well as applicable employer costs, taxes, and social security deductions.

Jota, a Liverpool forward, and his brother Andre Silva, a footballer at Portuguese club Penafiel, were both killed in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora on July 3 – just 10 days before Chelsea’s Club World Cup final victory and only two weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart at the same venue where he was later buried.

The Premier League winners recently revealed plans for a memorial sculpture at Anfield as the focal point of a lasting homage to Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 games for the club. For the full 2025-26 season, players will wear a “Forever 20” emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets, while the LFC Foundation, the club’s official charity, will start a grassroots football campaign in the honor of the Portugal international.

Liverpool also announced last month that the No. 20 shirt would be permanently retired at all levels of the club in remembrance of Jota. He joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, and his final contribution to the Reds was helping them win their 20th league title.

If there was ever a sight that demonstrated how much the forward was, is, and always will be loved, it was the makeshift memorial that stretched across all four stands at Anfield – 100 yards of flowers, balloons, stuffed teddies, and heartfelt letters that brought the football world together in tribute and saw the likes of Jordan Henderson, the current squad, and Everton add to it.
