Paul Pogba, a former Manchester United midfielder, has returned to football after an extended absence. The Frenchman, who last played for Juventus against Empoli in September 2023, has signed with AS Monaco, and the difference between his current salary and what he made in England is striking.
Pogba is a player who has divided opinion among Old Trafford fans: on the one hand, he was extremely brilliant; yet, his inconsistency was the source of his problems. He was re-sold to Juventus six years after his initial return.

Pogba, Manchester United’s most expensive signing to date, won the Europa League in his first season back in England, but that was the best he could hope for. After scoring 39 goals and providing 51 assists in 233 games, he returned to Juventus on a free transfer in 2022, but his tenure was brief.
If you’re not aware, Pogba, a 91-cap France international, was banned after failing a drugs test and so agreed to a mutual termination of his contract with Juventus. The Carrington graduate’s initial four-year ban was later reduced to 18 months.
Despite plans for a third stay at the Theatre of Dreams in February, Pogba – largely considered as one of the finest central midfielders since 1990 – is likely to play in Ligue 1 for the first time in his career with Adolf Hutter’s Monaco.
But what is his salary? According to French daily L’Equipe, the central midfielder has signed a two-year contract costing €3.84 million per year, a huge drop from his earnings at Old Trafford.
According to reports, the now-32-year-old sought an even more lucrative contract to extend his stay, and the club’s executives were debating if giving in to his demands made more sense than losing him on a free transfer again. Unfortunately, they didn’t.
According to Business Insider, he earned €17.6 million a year in 2021/22, a difficult season in which he started 27 games and scored ten goals for the Premier League heavyweights across all competitions.
A record signing for Manchester United, Pogba’s comeback to football is unquestionably positive; whether he can revert to his former form, bossing engine rooms across Europe, remains to be seen. On August 17, he will make his competitive debut for the French team against Le Havre at home.
