Former Man Utd defender left without a club after having his contract terminated following Club World Cup exit

The 35-year-old did not show up for the Club World Cup.

Following Boca Juniors’ elimination from the Club World Cup, Marcos Rojo’s contract with the Argentine team was cancelled, making him a free agent.

Alongside international teammate Carlos Tevez, Rojo was anticipated to establish himself as one of Boca’s major players after joining from Manchester United in 2021 for an unknown sum.

A few months later, after being sent off during a 1-0 victory against River Plate, he was prohibited from serving as captain of the team headquartered in Buenos Aires for a month.

Due to Boca manager Hugo Ibarra’s dressing room policies regarding dismissal, Rojo, who was given a one-match ban by the Argentine FA, gave up the armband.

The defender later played for La Bombonera for four years, but according to an ESPN story on Thursday, Rojo’s contract was terminated six months early.

As a result, Rojo will not play for Boca for the remainder of the season. The team is now halfway through their league campaign and is tied for first place in the Argentine Primera Division standings.

After playing 118 appearances for Boca, Rojo departs the team after not playing a single minute at the Club World Cup this summer. In addition, he took home four championships, including the 2022 Copa Argentina and Copa de la Liga.

Diego Monroig, an ESPN journalist, verified the rumours about his future.

“I can confirm that Boca’s squad is scheduled for Tuesday, and one player will not be present at the stadium: Marcos Rojo is no longer a Boca player,” he stated.

“The defender is moving forward with his departure from Boca; he won’t wait until the end of the year.”

“He will no longer be under Miguel Ángel Russo’s command,” Monroig continued. He will not be joining the squad on the plane since he is in the United States with his family. The coach will not have him during training on Tuesday.

Since moving from Manchester United, Rojo has struggled with a variety of injuries, including a muscular problem that hampered his play there. In 2022, he also had a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which prevented him from playing for months.
