Graphic Showing 10 Most Expensive Signings in Football History Goes Viral

Paying exorbitant fees is becoming more typical in the modern football era, and a graphic depicting the top ten most costly transfers in football history has begun to circulate on social media. And the hit rate is a major worry.

Players who are bought for large sums of money are immediately scrutinized, through no fault of their own. Every touch is scrutinized; every poor performance is analyzed, and they are frequently labeled as a ‘flop’ because they do not live up to their price tag.

An X user shared a graphic outlining the ten most costly football transactions of all time, ranging from Jack Grealish’s move from Aston Villa to Manchester City to Eden Hazard’s switch from Chelsea to Real Madrid, and it has gone viral.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar all feature on the list

Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, sits at the bottom of the list, having moved from Real Madrid to Juventus in the summer of 2018. Of course, he scored 101 goals in 134 matches in all competitions, but he wasn’t brought to Turin to win Serie A or the Coppa Italia.

The Portuguese talisman’s big-money acquisition also stalled a much-needed squad shake-up. The Grealish of old was nothing short of brilliant; yet, the winger’s high-profile transfer to Manchester has not gone as planned.

Antoine Griezmann’s move to Barcelona in January 2019 and Hazard’s move to rivals Los Blancos in the summer of the same year are ranked eighth and seventh, respectively. The latter is still regarded as one of the greatest dribblers in football history.

Enzo Fernandez is the only player in the top ten who is still playing for the club that has paid him well. It’s still too early to say whether the Argentine 24-year-old’s move to west London was a success.

Joao Felix, who is now struggling for playing time at Chelsea, was one of the most exciting players in world football when Atletico Madrid paid a high price for his services. In 131 appearances with them, he scored 52 goals.

Barcelona spent a lot of money in six months on Ousmane Dembele and Phillipe Coutinho, but neither could prove they were worth the millions they cost in Spain. The former is now a strong contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Even Kylian Mbappe’s move from AS Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain, the second-most expensive transfer of all time, has raised concerns because the Frenchman, 26, did not win the Champions League during his time in the capital.
