Fabrizio Romano provides major update on Martin Zubimendi after claims Real Madrid will ‘hijack’ Arsenal’s deal

Real Madrid was expected to make a “final push” to sign the Spain international midfielder, according to reports from Spanish media over the weekend.

Amid rumors that Real Madrid would “hijack” Arsenal’s offer for the Real Sociedad midfielder, Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Martin Zubimendi’s future.

Since the January transfer market closed, Zubimendi has been connected to the Gunners as Mikel Arteta seeks to expand his midfield options.

The 26-year-old’s Sociedad contract includes a £51 million release clause, which Arsenal is reportedly willing to activate.

Last summer, Zubimendi declined a transfer to Liverpool, saying he preferred to remain in Spain.

The Spaniard, who won Euro 2024, has emerged as a top transfer target for Real Madrid and their new manager Xabi Alonso, according to a report published on Sunday by the Spanish publication AS.

According to reports, Real Madrid is getting ready to make a “final push” for the midfield player because they think he’s the best choice on the transfer market right now.

Alonso, who was Zubimendi’s teammate while he was in charge of Sociedad’s B team, is also rumored to have made it “clear” that he is the player he wants to add to his roster.

Alonso was once referred to by Zubimendi as his “idol,” which may have had a role in his choice of next club.

Now that Romano has clarified the situation, Arsenal supporters can rejoice.

“We have many questions, we have many stories, and I respect all the sources on this story, because obviously until the deals are official, you can try until the very end,” Romano said in an explanation posted on his official YouTube account.

“They assure me that Real Madrid is attempting to achieve that from Spain.

“Clubs may attempt to enter and take control until the very last seconds before the agreements are signed.

However, from what I gather of this scenario, Martin Zubimendi has agreed to everything in order to join Arsenal.

“A long-standing understanding has existed with the club. I said “here we go” a few months back because, based on what I’ve heard, Zubimendi took everything Arsenal had to offer.

“He had previously spoken with Mikel Arteta, and he desired to hold off until the end of the season until the official procedures to honor Real Sociedad were completed.

“The agreement has been reached. In terms of documentation, they have already exchanged everything. Zubimendi will join Arsenal after completing the medical, signing the paperwork, and taking the photos.

He did, however, issue a warning to Gunners fans, saying: “In football, as with many things, you never know when Real Madrid or any other team will be able to alter this tale while the paperwork is done.

“But Arsenal are convinced he will be their player this summer.”
