Liverpool are closing in on a blockbuster deal that will see German international Florian Wirtz leave Leverkusen for Merseyside. After turning down a move to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, the 22-year-old could join Liverpool as early as this week, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds are moving rapidly in the transfer market after winning their 20th English top-flight trophy in Arne Slot’s first season at the club. Jeremie Frimpong is all but certain to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.
There’s still a lot of work to be done before Liverpool fans rush to the club shop to buy a Wirtz shirt. However, the number on the back of those kits has already been predicted in case he completes his massive deal to the Premier League giants.
Florian Wirtz, expected to play for Liverpool, may not get his desired uniform.

Wirtz is unlikely to be able to keep the number 10 shirt he now wears at Bayer Leverkusen. This is because Argentine midfield maestro Alexis MacAllister wears that number for the Premier League champions.
Wirtz is set to return to his original squad number at Leverkusen, since the former Brighton player is unlikely to leave. Wirtz took up the 27 shirt when he joined the club in 2020, which is still available at Anfield.
Given the shirt numbers already held by current Liverpool team members, it’s safe to presume Wirtz will adopt the number most recently worn by Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez. If he does, fans will be hoping he will be the first true star to wear the number for the Merseyside club.
Former Liverpool players Darwin Nunez and Divock Origi wore the unique number 27.

This means that the first time the adoring Kop saw the shirt number in action was when French defender Gregory Vignal arrived in 2000. The left-back, who had an inconsistent period in England, was succeeded by Swiss full-back Philipp Degen, who had a similar tenure with the club.
Divock Origi, who scored several crucial goals under Jurgen Klopp, notably in the 2019 Champions League final, was the club’s most successful 27-year-old ever. The Belgian netted 41 goals for the Reds before Darwin Nunez took over for an unimpressive debut season in England.
