Horrifying events have disrupted Liverpool’s open-top bus procession, with footage emerging of a car crashing with some of the thousands of fans who had gathered on the streets. After winning the title in late April, the squad had to wait until Sunday’s season finale to celebrate, when they finally received the championship trophy.
This was followed by the trophy procession on Monday, which began at 2pm. Thousands of people travelled from all over the country to attend the celebrations, but the festive atmosphere was cut short shortly after 6 p.m. when a vehicle struck many people. Footage circulating on social media showed police reacting to the area, and an update indicated that a guy had been caught.
Police Statement Released After Several Fans Hit by Car
There has been no information regarding any injuries
Merseyside Police issued a statement shortly after, saying: “We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.” We were alerted just after 6 p.m. today, Monday, May 26, following reports that a car had collided with many pedestrians on Water Street.
“The car came to a stop at the spot, and a male was seized. Emergency services are now on the site. We will provide additional updates as they become available.
It has already been verified that a 53-year-old white British male from the Liverpool region has been detained, and a police spokeswoman has begged that no one speculate about the incident.
“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.” We can confirm that the individual apprehended is a 53-year-old Caucasian British man from the Liverpool region. Extensive investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash. We would ask that individuals do not publish unpleasant content online, but instead send the film or information to us directly.”
While ambulances and paramedics are on the site, it is unclear how many people were injured in the event.
An eyewitness told Sky News that she “heard some screams,” before going into more detail about what happened.
“It was really noisy. Everyone sounded desperate. Then we peered out the window and witnessed the automobile run over some individuals. People began rushing (in) to pursue the driver and attempted to break the automobile. The police then tried everything to prevent and drive people away.
The incident occurred the same month that Barcelona’s title-winning triumph over Espanyol was stopped owing to a similar occurrence outside the stadium, with footage obtained of a driver losing control of their vehicle and colliding with many supporters.
