Matheus Cunha has reportedly chosen his shirt number for Manchester United next season, with the Wolves player expected to be Ruben Amorim’s first summer acquisition.
The Brazilian has been Wolves’ bright light in a challenging season, with 17 goals and six assists for Vitor Periera’s team.
Despite the fact that the transfer season does not open until June, Cunha has appeared to be heading to Old Trafford for some time, with David Ornstein stating that United are willing to pay the forward’s £62.5 million release clause.
Ruben Amorim has made no secret of his fondness for Cunha, heaping praise on the 25-year-old before of their match against Wolves last month.
“I think he’s [Cunha] doing an amazing job,” Amorim said.
“He’s playing a 3-4-3 and doing fairly well! He is changing certain players, and he has true quality players, such as Cunha and all of these people. “They’re fresh.”
According to Ben Jacobs, United will finally activate Cunha’s release clause this week after signing a five-year contract with the Red Devils.
Cunha will assume Rashford’s 10 shirt.
According to the article, Cunha is likely to assume Marcus Rashford’s number 10 shirt at Old Trafford if ‘everything goes to plan.’
Rashford has worn the number 10 shirt at Old Trafford since the summer of 2018, following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who took it over from club legend Wayne Rooney.
The England international was ruled out of Aston Villa’s final two matches of the season due to injury after being loaned out in January for disciplinary reasons.
Cunha has had his fair share of disciplinary difficulties this season, including a six-game suspension that has resulted in a strained relationship with Wolves fans.
However, after being elected Wolves’ player of the season, the Brazilian was quick to thank the fans in what appears to be a parting speech.
“Thank you for this award, player of the season,” he texted.
“There are no words to describe how joyful I was this season with all of you. Thank you to my teammates for becoming a family during both the difficult and joyful times we spent together.
“This season will hold a unique place in my heart. “Thank you, God, for everything,” he added.
