Why Son Heung-min Won’t Get Married Until He Retires

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has stated why he will not raise a family until after his playing career is finished, following footage of him becoming upset after being dubbed the godfather of one of his teammate’s sons. The South Korean star is a firm fan favourite in north London, thanks not just to his outstanding performances, but also to his contagious charisma and upbeat demeanour, which never fails to elevate fans.

Son’s passion to his club and country’s careers has required him to make numerous sacrifices in order to reach his current position. However, he is still doing so now, and the 32-year-old has explained why he will not marry while still playing.

Son Wants Family to Be His Priority

The winger says this can’t be the case while he is playing

In an interview with the Guardian in 2019, Son discussed his connection with his father and how he pushed him to work as hard as he did to reach the professional levels, including four-hour keepy-up sessions to practise his control. He also discussed his father’s continuing effect on him, implying that his father believes his son should wait until his profession is complete before marrying.

“This is something my father says, and I also agree. When you married, family, wife, and children will come first, followed by football. I want to ensure that while I play at the highest level, football remains number one.

“You don’t know how long you can play at the highest level. When you retire, or when you are 33 or 34, you can still enjoy a long life with your family.”

It was also mentioned to the former Bayer Leverkusen forward that certain managers desire their players to settle down and have a peaceful family life. However, the former Premier League Golden Boot winner believes this does not apply to him because he does not live a life riddled with controversy.

Son’s Reaction to Being Named Godfather

Welsh defender Ben Davies named his teammate the godfather to his young son

Despite not having his own family, the South Korean has previously been seen playing with some of his teammates’ children during end-of-season laps of honour. However, a more recent video has demonstrated how vital and beloved he is in the Tottenham locker room, as colleague and self-proclaimed best buddy Ben Davies picked baby as the godfather of his youngest baby.

Son explained what it meant to him:

“This is wonderful. I wasn’t expecting the part. Ben has been my best friend for about ten years now.

“Seeing his son is really great. This is something I’ve never felt before. It wasn’t even my son, yet it was really emotional. He trusts me; giving me that responsibility means a lot to me, and I want to be a good godfather.
