Scott McTominay’s immediate reaction to Serie A title win has emerged and it speaks volumes

Scott McTominay was on his haunches and brimming with emotion as a city erupted in celebration and the Serie A trophy was being meticulously etched behind the scenes at the Diego Maradona.

The players enjoyed the moment with supporters, staff, club owner and president Aurelio De Laurentiis, and Antonio Conte following Napoli’s 2-0 victory over Cagliari to win their fourth Scudetto.

After serving a touchline ban, the head coach returned to the pitch and embraced Romelu Lukaku, the striker who scored the second goal to seal the victory.

As Naples blazed around the Diego Maradona, McTominay, who had volleyed beautifully in the first, had a minute to cry inside the stadium.

The Scotland international contributed significantly to a historic Serie A title victory, scoring 12 goals and dishing out four assists, earning him all the praise he currently receives as a champion in one of football’s greatest cities.

In addition to their victories in 1987, 1990, and 2023, Napoli added this season’s trophy.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo, 31, who will lift the newly engraved trophy tonight, has now matched Diego Maradona’s record of being captain for the first two Scudetto victories.

Last summer, McTominay was a high-profile addition to the Partenopei, and he reached his prime at the ideal time.

He has become one of the most significant and influential midfield players in Europe, and this season, he was unquestionably Napoli’s most crucial player.

Former Manchester United teammate Lukaku, fellow Scottish international Billy Gilmour, and on-loan Bournemouth midfielder Phillip Billing, who entered as a late substitute against Cagliari and was on the pitch when the final whistle blew on an incredible season for the Naples club, are among the 28-year-old Lancastrian’s teammates under Conte.

After losing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain and finishing tenth last season, more than 40 points behind winners Inter Milan, Conte has now won the Scudetto with three different clubs and was at the centre of the celebration, but it was McTominay’s reaction that caught the attention of the television cameras at the end of an incredible season. After more than 20 years on the books at Manchester United, McTominay now has his first league title, and he was the show.
