Fans are incensed that Manchester United will have a significant advantage over Spurs if they play one other in the Europa League final.
After seven years, the Red Devils are now the favorites to win their first European trophy.
If Manchester United plays Premier League opponent Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, they will have a significant advantage.
United’s decisive 3-0 victory in the away first leg of their semi-final matchup with Athletic Club on Thursday night marked a significant step towards their advancement to the Europa League final.
After defeating Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt in the other semi-final first leg, Tottenham Hotspur also made significant progress toward reaching the final, virtually guaranteeing an all-Premier League matchup in the championship game.
However, Spurs supporters are unhappy because United will have a significant edge over their opponents if it is to be an English Europa League final.
This season, United and Spurs have had nearly identical campaigns. Both teams are suffering in the Premier League, finishing in 14th and 16th place, respectively.
But if they win the Europa League title this year, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglu and United manager Ruben Amorim can make amends.
The Red Devils are currently the favorites to win the trophy, and their chances will undoubtedly be improved by the fact that they will have an additional forty-two hours to recuperate following their Premier League game if they play Tottenham in the final.
Aston Villa will host Spurs at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, while United will fly to London to play Chelsea at 8 p.m. on Friday before the Europa League final begins at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday, May 21.
One Spurs supporter responded to the news by writing: “It was always going to be me, Man Utd, getting the benefit, wasn’t it? What’s the point of having both on Saturday or Sunday?
One further stated: “It is irrational for the Premier League to favor one team over another. Ange should send a team of kids out if nothing changes.
“What makes other leagues appear to have better procedures in place to support their teams competing in the later stages of Europe?” another person wrote. It’s not fair.
One United supporter went so far as to remark that their team had the small edge of playing in the San Mames stadium three weeks before the championship game against Athletic Club.
It is important to remember, though, that both teams are secure from Premier League relegation and cannot contend for a European position, thus it is likely that they will heavily rotate their teams for the rest of the season in order to concentrate on the Europa League.
