The Reds need just three more points from their remaining five games to formally secure their 20th championship, and they are now 13 points ahead at the top of English football. Arsenal will believe that injuries have been their biggest problem this season, ruining what could have been their best chance to win a league title for the first time in twenty years. It appears likely that they will place on the podium for a third consecutive year, but they have yet to get any recognition for their consistency.
However, there is always a bright side to a storm. The injury crisis was primarily caused by Mikel Arteta’s attack, thus marginal players were given the responsibility, and some have taken full advantage of it. Mikel Merino has silenced many of his early detractors, including Carragher, since moving to north London last summer. He has gone from being a coveted acquisition to an unsung star.

Carragher was one of several who questioned Arsenal’s decision to spend just over £30 million to acquire the Spanish midfielder from Real Sociedad. “Prioritising signing midfielder Mikel Merino ahead of another attacker last summer looks like a mistake,” he stated at the time. “Merino is not a game-changer.”
Early in his tenure, the negative remarks were mostly accurate, and months had gone by with the Euro 2024 winner doing little more than filling a spot on the squad sheet. Merino, however, stepped up significantly when the north Londoners began to pay attention to an expanding injury list.
Arteta was obliged to use the centre midfielder as a makeshift striker after losing Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus to injuries. He has six goals and five assists in his previous 14 appearances, and his two assists against Real Madrid helped them advance to the Champions League semi-finals. According to Metro, Carragher has undoubtedly been forced to retract what he said to Sky Sports prior to Sunday’s match:
“Merino has been a revelation ever since he assumed that striker role. He has six goals and four assists in the last 13 games, but I know he’s deeper today.”
Merino is starting to emerge as Arsenal’s most notable acquisition of the season, with some comparing him to David Silva. Stan Kroenke and company are still keeping an eye on Alexander Isak, though, and the Gunners are still anticipated to be looking for a new No. 9 at the end of the season.
Nevertheless, Merino’s comeback has probably won him a spot in Arteta’s future plans, even if it’s from midfield when his star attackers get back from injury.
