According to Kevin De Bruyne’s latest remarks regarding his imminent departure from Manchester City, the Belgian international appears to have little control over his own future at the Etihad after his current deal expires in June. You would think that a player of his calibre, who helped the team win six Premier League titles and its first-ever Champions League championship, would be allowed to retire on his own terms.
But for the 33-year-old, who is regarded by many as one of the best midfielders the Premier League has ever seen, that doesn’t seem to be the case. His post-match remarks after City’s 2-0 victory over Everton clearly show that he wasn’t the one holding the pen when the last chapter of his City story was written, even though he still believes he can play at his best and there are growing rumours that he could move to another Big Six team in the summer.
His impending exit next month will mark the end of a spectacular ten years in City blue, during which De Bruyne contributed to an incredible 284 goals in 416 games. However, the focus has turned to the club’s leadership as he gets ready to exit the stage, and many fans are worried that their infamous ruthlessness may have stepped over the thin line between ambition and callousness.
De Bruyne Shares What Was Said During the Hierarchy Meeting
The Belgian departed with the impression that a decision had been made without his input.

“It was very brief. I don’t feel like I really want to share, because I feel it was more business-wise for them. They just made a decision based on that. It wasn’t really a long conversation, it was just what they told me.” De Bruyne began by stating that he couldn’t really talk about what was discussed on the inside when he was pressed about his decision to leave Man City this summer. You can watch the full interview below.
He went on, “I don’t feel awkward [about it],” adding, “In the end, it is what it is.” However, his club’s supporters disagree, believing that the club’s leadership made a mistake in letting him go. One X user wrote, “This is not the way to treat a player who has given everything to the club,” another said, “How can you treat your greatest ever player this way? The club should be ashamed,” and a third said, “This is truly heartbreaking. He’s been treated so poorly.”
