He was praised by the club for exemplifying their principles.

Thompson’s passing has caused great sadness in the football community, and United responded to his passing on social media right after. The Premier League team shared the following on X (Twitter):

“A man who personified the ideals of our club. We regret to inform you about Joe Thompson’s passing. We send our condolences to Joe’s family and friends during this trying time. Joe was a kind guy who had a strong bond with our club from an early age.”

However, they weren’t the only previous team to issue a statement over his passing. His demise was also addressed by Rochdale, who published a story on their official club website. They lauded his affectionate, contagious nature and called him a wonderful father and loving husband. Members of the team and their fans adore Thompson, who played more than 200 games for the club.

Rochdale released the following official statement: “Joe, who had been tenaciously fighting cancer for the third time, died quietly at home on Thursday, surrounded by his loved ones. Known as “Joey T” by those in the Rochdale community, he proudly represented the badge in more than 200 games for his hometown team. Joe was a gifted football player when we first met him, but we quickly came to love his warm, contagious attitude.

“On and off the pitch, he took on every challenge head-on. Everyone who has been impacted by his narrative has found inspiration in his path and unwavering attitude. Above all, Joe was an amazing father to Thailula and Athena Rae and a devoted husband to Chantelle. At this very sad time, our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends.

Peace be with you, Thompson, Joe.
