In the Champions League quarterfinal first leg that took place on Tuesday, Declan Rice disclosed the seven-word instruction that his Arsenal colleague Bukayo Saka offered him before to his scoring his first free-kick of the evening against Real Madrid.
Rice, who is 26 years old, was the deciding factor in Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium, which turned out to be a comfortable victory.
A superb curled free kick from the England international opened the score in the 58th minute. Thibaut Courtois, the custodian for Los Blancos, had no chance of stopping the shot.
However, Rice did not go on from there. After a period of twelve minutes, he scored a similarly fantastic second free-kick, which gave the Gunners a two-goal advantage. Five minutes later, Mikel Merino added a third goal with a precise finish.
And despite the fact that Nicolas Jover, the set-piece coach for Arsenal, is an essential member of Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff, Rice said that he disregarded Jover’s instructions.
During an interview with Prime Video that took place after the game, Rice stated, “I don’t know if it will ever sink in.”
“I fancied both (free-kicks) and to have the confidence, I am a bit speechless.”
“Martin [Odegaard] was saying to cross, I said it doesn’t make sense to chip it like that,” he said to reporters. “Jover is telling me to cross, and it didn’t make any sense,” said Nicolas, the set-piece coach. “We practise them all the time.”
Rice continued by saying, “Bukayo Saka made the statement, ‘If you feel it, go for it.'” After taking a look at the wall and the keeper, I stated that I could bend it, and that is exactly what transpired.
Before scoring his second goal, the former West Ham midfielder also provided a full explanation of the procedure.
“Mbappe was standing too close,” he stated. “We were going to touch and set it, but he was standing too close.”
I simply went with what he was doing because he was in the midst. I put in a lot of practice. As a result of the first, I was able to gain confidence because I had nothing to lose.
During the second leg of the match, which will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, Madrid will have to overcome a three-goal deficit, which is something that even Los Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti recognised was unlikely to happen.
“The chances are pretty slim but we have to try, and we’ll try and do it any way we can,” Ancelotti remarked in his news conference after the match had place. “Will we be able to pull it off? Let’s see. One can get the impression that there is no chance after tonight, but in football, things are always subject to change. It was not anticipated that Arsenal would score two goals from free kicks, but everything is possible.
There have been some unusual occurrences at the Bernabéu, but it is a really difficult situation.
