‘I dropped him, he didn’t take it well’ – Sam Allardyce offers Illan Meslier advice amid Leeds errors

In light of Illan Meslier’s recurring errors in goalkeeping over the current campaign, Sam Allardyce has remembered the decision to release him from his position at Leeds United.

In spite of the fact that he has been a reliable figure between the sticks at Elland Road, the Frenchman has been subjected to criticism for a string of shortcomings.

Meslier was responsible for both of Swansea City’s goals in their match this past weekend, which ended in a 2-2 draw. As a result, many Leeds supporters demanded that he be replaced.

Tomorrow, in their Championship match against Luton Town, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT 2, manager Daniel Farke has announced that Karl Darlow will start for the team.

During his brief time in 2023, Allardyce took a choice similar to this one, and he explained to talkSPORT the reasons behind his decision about the matter.

“I dropped him Alan,” he said to Alan Brazil on the Breakfast program that aired on Friday. Due of his prior performance, I decided not to include him.

“As soon as I arrived, I had the impression that it was really unjust to keep him looking at the prior games to determine the number of errors he had truly committed at that specific place and time.

When I called him in because it was my first game, he did not take it very well. He was a wonderful and huge boy.

I would have kicked myself if I had put him in and he made another mistake, and that would have sapped his confidence once again. However, I felt that it was the appropriate thing to do because otherwise I would have kicked myself.

Because he is such a great custodian, I find it surprising that he is making those blunders at this point in time.

Nevertheless, there is something there that is plainly reflected in the nervousness, and I believe that this is something that is hurting Leeds United at the moment.

“If you make that error, there’s nobody there to cover you up as a custodian, so it’s a thankless task, isn’t it?”

Meslier was not used in any of Allardyce’s four matches at Leeds in the run-up to the club’s relegation from the Premier League in the 2022–2023 season.

However, despite the fact that the 25-year-old has made 82 appearances in the Championship since then, errors have been somewhat regular in the current campaign.

One of his most egregious mistakes occurred in October, when Leeds was leading Sunderland by a score of 2-1 in the final minute of stoppage time.

As a result of Meslier’s failure to collect a ball in the box, Farke’s team allowed it to sneak in for a score of 2-2, which resulted in the loss of points in the last minutes of the game.

Three months later, during the match against Hull City, which ended in a 3-3 draw, he deflected a cross into the path of an opponent, who went on to score.

After Leeds squandered the opportunity to expand their advantage at the top of the table, his teammates reacted with anger and frustration. This was because Leeds had missed the opportunity.

The team managed by Farke has subsequently dropped in the standings of the Championship, although they are still in the running for promotion to the Premier League by automatic means.

They are tied with Burnley on 81 points, although they have a better goal differential than Burnley. However, they are located behind Sheffield United in the standings with seven games left to play.
