Paul Scholes Named ‘Unprofessional’ Ex-Teammate as Man United’s Worst Ever Signing

Paul Scholes vehemently asserted that the former goalie couldn’t even kick a football and declared that he believes Mark Bosnich to be the worst signing in Manchester United’s history. The Red Devils have been a dominant force near the top of the Premier League for most of its more than thirty-year history. Over the years, they have acquired some amazing players, like Peter Schmeichel, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is not to argue that Sir Alex Ferguson’s hiring process was perfect, though, as many jerks showed up at Old Trafford. Scholes was asked to list the greatest and worst signings in United’s history during an interview on The Overlap in September 2024. First, there won’t be many who disagree with his statement that Rooney was their best-ever acquisition.

When asked to identify the worst player, he unexpectedly went back to a period when United was unbeatable and declared Bosnich the worst signing in the football team’s history. Some of the people in attendance named guys like Antony and Bebe.

Scholes asserted that Bosnich was incapable of kicking a football.
Additionally, he called him unprofessional.

When Schmeichel left United in 1999, the team had to recruit someone to take his position. They had more than a few misses in between before they finally discovered a gem in Edwin van der Sar, which took several years. Bosnich, who spent eight years with Aston Villa before being signed in 1999, was one of them.

However, things didn’t work out, and the Australian only played at Old Trafford for a year. It’s not surprising that the move didn’t work out after hearing Scholes’s criticism of the keeper. Bosnich, he claimed, was unprofessional and incapable of even kicking a football.

“He was so unprofessional when he came to us, even though I thought he was a good keeper at Villa. To be honest, it was absurd. You typically have 15–20 shots during shooting practice, but after three he’s exhausted, and I didn’t understand he couldn’t kick a football. To be honest, it was unlike anything I had ever seen.

“He couldn’t even make it to the halfway line in our season opener against Everton, and none of us noticed. No breeze was blowing. The day was ideal.

Before deciding on Bosnich, Scholes considered Massimo Taibi, Alexis Sanchez, and Antony as the worst signings in United history.

In the Premier League, Manchester United has had 24 goalkeepers. But who is the best? And who is the worst?

Bosnich’s Premier League career was solid.
He’d been a regular for Villa

The Australian actually had a successful career in the English top division with Aston Villa, even though Scholes said that he believed Bosnich was the worst acquisition in United history. Prior to moving to Old Trafford in 1999, he was a member of the Midlands Club from 1991 until 1999. During his tenure at Villa Park, he appeared in about 250 games and made a name for himself as a reliable Premier League goalkeeper.

However, after joining United, all of that effort was undone, and he left after just one season to join Chelsea. In three years, he only made five league appearances for the Blues before departing in 2003.
