Gazzetta dello Sport originally ranked the top 12 football managers who were currently without work; however, only eight of them are currently working.
The Italian publication revealed their list in September 2022, only a few days after Chelsea made the decision to take Thomas Tuchel out of his position.
His departure at Stamford Bridge was precipitated by a bad start to the season as well as issues with the club’s board of directors. The previous year, Tuchel had brought Stamford Bridge a second Champions League competition title.
In addition to his former position as manager of Bayern Munich, the German is currently working with the England men’s national team. Prior to that, he was in charge of Bayern Munich after his time at Chelsea.
The second name on Gazzetta’s list was that of Mauricio Pochettino, who is from the same country as Tuchel and is an international manager. Pochettino is now in charge of the United States men’s national team as they get ready to host the 2026 international competition.
Marcelo Bielsa, a former manager of Leeds United, is also set to be in the United States with Uruguay during the summer of 2019.
Claudio Ranieri, the manager of Leicester, who led the club to victory in the Premier League, was also without a job at the time when Gazzetta compiled its list. Although he is now in charge of Roma, he plans to move on from managing at the conclusion of the current season.
In addition, Paulo Sousa, who has previously managed Swansea and Leicester, was appointed. In addition to a stint with the Polish national team, the former Portuguese midfielder has had a career that may be described as a “journeyman.” He has managed teams in a number of different countries, including Italy, France, Brazil, Hungary, Switzerland, and China, among others.
Shabab Al Ahli, a team that competes in the United Arab Emirates, has recently appointed Sousa as their manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, is now the manager of Besiktas, a team that competes in the Turkish Super Lig. He has been away from the sport for a considerable amount of time since his dismissal from Manchester United in 2022.
And the last two names on Gazzetta’s list of presently employed names were Quique Setien and Dejan Stankovic. These two individuals are currently in command of the Chinese club Beijing Guoan and the Russian side Spartak Moscow, respectively.
Nevertheless, what about the remaining four names?
I am Rafael Benitez.
Following his dismissal from Everton in January of 2022, Rafael Benitez was still not playing football by the time September 2022 rolled around.
After that, in June of 2023, he would make his comeback to managing role with the La Liga club Celta Vigo organisation. In spite of this, Celta was just two points above the relegation zone in March of the following year, and the Spaniard was fired for the second time in the span of eighteen months.
A. Low, Joachim
Following a managerial career that included stints in Germany, Austria, and Turkey, Joachim Low emerged as the successor to Jurgen Klinsmann as the manager of Germany in 2006. He remained in that position for a total of fifteen years.
Low has not yet returned to football, and it is not yet known whether the 65-year-old has already managed his final match. This is despite the fact that he has been associated with openings at Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
The Sampaoli, Jorge
Over the course of his career, Jorge Sampaoli has managed twenty different clubs, including stints in command of Argentina, Chile, and Marseille. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential people in the world of football management.
Following his departure from Marseille, Sampaoli was not affiliated with any club at the time of the list; however, he has since added three teams to his resume.
Rennes, his most recent club, was a Ligue 1 team, where he played for only two months and ten matches before being fired in January. During that time, he won three of those matches.
A. Zidane Zinedine A.
After spending two stints at Real Madrid, the most important issue that supporters of Zinedine Zidane are wondering about is whether or not the great Frenchman would ever try to return to management.
The answer is yes, and it is most likely.
A third tenure at Real Madrid does not appear to be very plausible, but it is impossible to say for sure. On the other hand, a period in command of the France national team is definitely a possibility.
As soon as the current head coach, Didier Deschamps, made the announcement that he would be stepping down from his position after the 2026 World Cup, Zidane was immediately identified as the most likely candidate to take his place.
There aren’t a lot of other outstanding French candidates who could step in; for example, Nice coach Franck Haise could be one of them, and Bruno Genesio of Lille could be another. Therefore, if the French FA does not want to look towards a foreign manager, Zidane will most certainly be among the major candidates.
