After a close 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Everton on Wednesday, Arne Slot’s Liverpool increased their lead at the top of the Premier League standings to 12 points once again. Before the much awaited kickoff, fans in the UK who were watching the Merseyside derby noticed something strange.
The FA Cup weekend and international break kept both teams off the pitch for two and a half weeks, yet the match at Anfield was fiercely contested, with Diogo Jota’s goal giving Slot’s title contenders the three points. James Tarkowski of Everton was lucky not to be sent off for a high charge on Alexis Mac Allister, while Luis Diaz looked offside in the build-up to the lone goal, causing controversy.
Rival supporters, however, think they saw something just as contentious before the ball was even kicked. The iconic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ anthem was played before the referee’s whistle, as is customary, but there seemed to be an issue with how Sky Sports aired the song.
YNWA Merseyside Derby “Sky Sports just outed themselves for playing YNWA,” fans asked.

Football fans have accused Sky Sports of playing a pre-recorded song over the Liverpool fans’ singing of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” according to the Daily Mail. The audio seemed to be out of sync, giving the impression that the broadcast was trying to improve the mood. Watch the video below:
“Sky faking the famous Anfield atmosphere” was the comment that accompanied the video on the internet. Another fan swiftly took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask: “Have Sky Sports just outed themselves for playing YNWA over the actual crowd to make it sound louder?????” Others were divided between believing that the song was being played on a recording or that the fans were singing it loudly. One fan wrote: “As if Sky Sports literally just changed the YNWA sound to make it sound better,” while another said: “Sky Sports proving Anfield does have a recording of the fans singing YNWA.” Still others were simply perplexed by the fact that they were listening to the fans sing two different parts of the song simultaneously, with the question summarising it: “Was that sky playing a recording of YNWA???”
