Premier League release statement on controversial James Tarkowski decision as ex-referee makes damning VAR claim live on Sky

Everton’s James Tarkowski made a harsh charge on Alexis Mac Allister during the Merseyside derby versus Liverpool. However, the video assistant referee (VAR) decided not to send him off. The Premier League has issued a statement regarding this particular judgement.

During the early stages of the first half at Anfield, Tarkowski delivered a strong follow-through that struck with the leg of Mac Allister. This occurred after Tarkowski had slipped in to win the ball from the Argentine.

First, there was immediate worry for Mac Allister, who was allowed to continue playing, but then the focus rapidly shifted to a video assistant referee (VAR) check.
The situation was resolved, and Tarkowski was only given a yellow card for his performance on the pitch.

Dominik Szoboszlai subsequently attempted to take a following free kick from a distance of twenty yards, but his attempt was narrowly unsuccessful and went over the crossbar. The score remained 0-0.

Gary Neville, who was providing commentary for Sky Sports, stated that the Everton centre defender was “very lucky” not to be awarded a red card because of the follow-through. He also described the challenge as a “potential leg breaker.”

Additionally, Mike Dean, a former referee for the Premier League, was present in the studio for the Sky Sports Soccer Special and concurred with the Manchester United icon.

During the broadcast, commentator Peter Drury stated, “We have heard that Mike Dean, who is participating in the panel with Sky Sports News tonight, has agreed with you, Gary as well.” He has stated that, in his opinion, it ought to have been examined, and he believes that it ought to have been treated as a red card.

The Twitter account for the Premier League’s Match Centre issued a statement that read as follows: “The referee’s call of yellow card for a reckless foul by Tarkowski was checked by the VAR, with contact on the follow through after Tarkowski had played the ball deemed to be reckless.”

Thereafter, Everton would come close to grabbing the lead in the first half through Beto, whose shot hit the left post. However, the goal was ultimately not taken.

Although the Portugal striker poked the ball between the legs of Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal, he was found to have been barely in front of Virgil van Dijk in the buildup period, which resulted in the shot being disallowed for offside. This was the second time that the striker had been disallowed for offside.
