After Everton’s 1-0 loss at Anfield on Wednesday, David Moyes was criticised for a “embarrassing” post-match interview. Diogo Jota’s game-winning goal gave Liverpool their 100th Merseyside derby win and moved them one step closer to winning their 20th league championship.
The match wasn’t without controversy, as one might expect. Only seven weeks ago, there were two red cards and a number of heated moments during the final-ever derby at Goodison Park. The so-called “friendly derby” is anything but, as demonstrated by the intensity that persisted into this match. Anfield was the scene of another intense match, with James Tarkowski’s careless studs-up challenge on Alexis Mac Allister and Darwin Nunez’s dubious yellow card following Jordan Pickford’s kick.
Moyes didn’t take the outcome well, and his post-match comments have left many perplexed. He is now winless in 20 Premier League games at Anfield.
David Moyes’ ‘Embarrassing’ Post-Match Interview
The Scot has been slammed for seemingly not knowing the rules

An Everton defender quickly cleared the ball after Luis Diaz appeared to be offside in the lead-up to Liverpool’s goal, and Jota took advantage of the situation by shooting it past Jordan Pickford. Since the Colombian winger was judged not to have interfered with play, the goal was upheld. But Moyes thought VAR ought to have disqualified it. Watch the interview below to hear what he said:
“They are awarded an offside goal. That’s why tonight’s game is different. I believe Tarkowski has been hampered by his teammates. It’s a blatant offside, so I believe the choice is simple. There isn’t any explanation that comes to me for why that wouldn’t have been offside.
Later on in the same interview, Moyes also appeared to praise Tarkowski for a challenge on Mac Allister that the rest of the world – including Duncan Ferguson – regarded as one of the most straightforward red cards ever (watch the incident below). He added:
“My first instinct was that it was a great tackle in a derby. A tackle that we used to witness a few years back. I am aware that things are a little different now than they were then. We could have been a little lucky, but don’t compare it to Liverpool’s goal because that was another occurrence that gave them the victory.
Fans online have taken offence by his intriguing remarks, with one X user saying: “Moyes has embarrassed himself.” After playing the game for so long, you would think he would be familiar with the rules. Unaware of the red card. “I’m clueless about the offside,” one person said, while another added, “Moyes is a fool.” Davey kid, the two incidences had nothing to do with each other. Tarkowski ought not to have been on the pitch prior to the goal.
“Diaz made no attempt for the ball and never interfered with play,” a third person commented. Moyes seems to be offering justifications for his team’s defeat in a match that they didn’t deserve to win in the first place. A fourth said: “David Moyes obviously doesn’t know the offside rule.” “Nothing new there,” the fourth said. That is a fact, not an opinion. How is it possible for a Premier League manager to appear as though he has never watched football in his life during a post-match interview?
Another person commented, “David Moyes gave an interview straight out of the 1990s,” while a sixth person came to the conclusion, “A case of a manager not knowing the laws of the game.”
