A star player for Manchester United has been criticised by Ruben Amorim for making “wrong choices” during his team’s loss to Nottingham Forest by a score of solely one goal.
After just five minutes of play, former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga scored the game’s lone goal, causing Amorim to suffer his sixth Premier League defeat during his time at Old Trafford.
The Swedish international raced from his own half at a frightening pace, sprinting 85 meters in nine seconds, before putting the ball past Andre Onana. He was able to score the goal.
Although United had the majority of the ball and more shots on target during the match at the City Ground, they were unable to find the back of the net for the eleventh successive Premier League match of the season.
In a remarkable turn of events, they appeared to be at their most dangerous in the latter stages of the game, when Harry Maguire was substituted in as an emergency striker and Murillo diverted an effort that was on the line.
There were not many performers who stood out as particularly impressive; however, Alejandro Garnacho was subjected to a great deal of criticism for his poor decision making. As a result of the Argentina international’s consistent disregard for Patrick Dorgu’s overlapping run from left wing-back, he had a number of shots that were both high and wide.
Although Amorim acknowledged that Garnacho was “trying too much,” he lauded the work ethic that he displayed in tracking back, which was a crucial area in which the Portuguese boss needed to see improvement.
“He is trying,” Amorim said about Garnacho during his press conference. “He is trying.”
On occasion, you may have a day in which you are doing the right things, but in the final third of the game, we were not as good as we could have been. This is something that can happen.
Such a thing is possible during the game. The fact that he is able to run back when he needs to is the single most important thing that happens during the game.
“Of course, we want a player who performs well in one-on-one situations. There are times when he is trying too hard, and he has Dorgu to make a move, but I believe that he is trying his best to assist the team and is doing his best.
“Sometimes he doesn’t make the best choice but I think you can point to any player [and say that] today.”
While this is going on, a significant number of United supporters have changed their minds about the January signing Dorgu, who was initially praised for his performance but was widely criticised for his lacklustre performance on Tuesday.
After the game, Forest legend Martin O’Neill, who was on duty as a pundit for TNT Sports, criticised the former Lecce player by saying, “I could have done what he did! He is on the left side of the field, he is in possession of the ball, and you are saying, “Come on!” You are responsible for taking on players. Don’t let them be!'”
United will make their return to action on Sunday when they play Manchester City in a derby. They will be looking to win both matches against their rivals during this matchup.
