Owen Hargreaves settles the Paul Scholes v Steven Gerrard debate once and for all with clear answer

Previous to this, Owen Hargreaves was the one who resolved the debate between Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard.

Both Gerrard and Scholes are considered to be two of the best midfielders that England has ever come up with.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool were successful in their careers, as evidenced by the numerous trophies that they won while playing for their respective teams.

The question of which of the two players is the superior one has been a topic of discussion among football fans over the years.

In September of 2024, former England star Hargreaves was asked to choose between Scholes and Gerrard, who had previously been teammates of his throughout his career.

In an interview with talkSPORT, he stated, “Both crazy players, different.”

“Scholesy’s like smaller and not as physical, Stevie, he’s like 6ft1 and everything.”

Continuing, Hargreaves stated, “But, Scholesy, I adore Scholesy very much.” One step ahead of everyone else, he was just two steps ahead.

When Hargreaves was asked if Scholes was the best midfielder he had ever played with, his response was straightforward: “All day.”

In 2021, Hargreaves discussed the distinctions between Scholes and Gerrard in an interview with Give Me Sport. The interview took place two years later.

His explanation was as follows: “Scholesy is one of the most intelligent players I’ve ever seen kick a ball.” Even when he was training for England during that generation, such as when we had Becks, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, and so on, the team that he was on usually ended up winning. It was just that he had a way of making football look like it was so simple.

Nevertheless, Stevie was a unique individual. Stevie was skilled in whatever he did, and he had the ability to kill you. In terms of physical strength. With a personality that was to die for, he was able to tackle, pass long, pass short, drive from the middle of the field, and come up with enormous goals.

In addition, Hargreaves mentioned Frank Lampard, who is frequently a part of the debate regarding the midfield position alongside Scholes and Gerrard: “And then you’ve got Frank. On the whole, Frank emerged victorious. He was able to get the most out of everything he had at his disposal. Something about Frank that I adored.

When I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time watching him work. Training in England consists of work, work, and more work. Simply for the purpose of getting better. Therefore, it is not an accurate comparison because each of them is so exceptional, and I do not believe that Frank or Stevie would have been upset if Scholesly had been among the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“I don’t think Scholsey would have been upset that Frank and Stevie got it in because we’re talking about three really iconic players.”
