Ex-Chelsea Defender Filipe Luis Could Land One of World Football’s Biggest Jobs

Filipe Luis, a former defender for Chelsea, is a candidate for one of the most important positions in sport. Over the past year, the 39-year-old, who is most known for his two stints with Atletico Madrid, has established himself in the football management industry.

According to The Sun, Luis has already won three championships (Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, and Campeonato Carioca) after taking over as head coach of Flamengo at the end of September. The team is currently on an incredible 24-game winning streak. The former left-back is currently in serious contention to land every Brazilian coach’s ideal position. He completed his playing career with Flamengo in 2024 and went on to lead the team’s Under-17s and Under-20s a few months later.

Luis a Serious Contender for Brazil Job

Former defender is one of three primary candidates

Dorival Junior, Brazil’s current manager, is probably going to be fired after the country’s crushing 4-1 loss to bitter rival Argentina on Tuesday. It appears that the 62-year-old may soon be fired after being called “a decent man thoroughly out of his depth” by Tim Vickery, the BBC’s renowned South American football reporter.

According to ESPN, Luis is one of the names being floated by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which will hold a meeting on Friday to consider Dorival Junior’s future. Brazil will select a new coach who will be tasked with winning the 2026 World Cup. Other contenders include Jorge Jesus, the 70-year-old Portuguese coach currently leading Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia, and Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid and a former target for Brazil.

Although it would seem that Ancelotti, one of the best football managers in history, is the CBF’s top aim, luring the Italian coach away from Real Madrid won’t be simple. Given that Luis is 26 years younger than Ancelotti, he seems like a more accessible and cost-effective choice.

It’s unknown if the former full-back would accept such a demanding position at this early point in his managerial career, but Vickery calls Luis “a man of great intelligence who has made an impressive start to his coaching career with Rio giants Flamengo.” However, Luis might find it impossible to resist the chance to assist Brazil in winning their first World Cup since 2002, especially with elite players like Vinicius Junior and Raphinha at his disposal.
