It was revealed by Jesse Lingard, a former midfielder for Manchester United, that Wayne Rooney had a strict rule regarding cars during his time with the club.
The 32-year-old Lingard made his debut in the Premier League for Manchester United in 2014, when the club was playing Swansea City. He had previously worked his way up through the ranks at Manchester United.
After that, he went on to score 35 goals in 232 appearances for the club, one of which came during extra time of United’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final in 2016.
However, he was never able to reach his full potential while playing for the Red Devils. Following five loan stints, during which he played for teams such as Derby County and West Ham United, he signed with Nottingham Forest in 2022 and then followed that up with a move to FC Seoul, a team that competes in the Korean League at the time.
In an interview with the Mail that was published on Saturday, the 32-year-old discussed everything related to football and disclosed that he continues to watch highlights of Manchester United’s matches, despite the fact that he finds it difficult to watch live matches due to the nine-hour time difference.
Additionally, he disclosed that his former Red Devils teammate Rooney had a strict policy regarding automobiles, which he shared with Lingard.
“With us being in the first team, you know, it’s obviously knowing the right place, the right time to do things and stuff like that,” Lingard explained to reporters.
As for destroying the culture? All we did was attempt to make it more robust. We were able to respond to success by smiling and laughing, and we were also successful in winning games. That is a good example of culture, right?
“Wayne Rooney advised me, ‘Don’t buy your first car until you’ve played fifty games.’ Don’t do that yet. Obviously, fifty games arrived, and I was driving a Range Rover when Rooney asked me, “Whose is that?” I was parked behind the Range Rover. Have you played fifty games by this point?
And that was the acceptance of me. My attempt to be flashy has never been made. Undoubtedly, if you have nice things, there will be times when you want to show them off. The photographers, on the other hand, would follow me around and take pictures of me while I was in my car each time we drove in.
Lingard had previously disclosed that Rooney was a source of motivation for him, and that he gained something “every day” from the football player who holds the record for most goals scored for Manchester United, with whom he had played 46 times.
Lingard made this statement in 2017, saying, “You learn every day from him.”
The additional point he made was that “his experience in games, especially when you’re young.”
“If it’s only 1-0 it’s always hard to manage a game, and he knew what to do at times, especially towards the end of games.”
