‘Keep quiet’ – Thibaut Courtois fires back after forcing Belgium teammate to quit national team

A dig from a teammate was something that Thibaut Courtois was never going to take lightly, and he has responded in a manner that is extremely stinging.

Having sat out of the Belgium national team for a significant amount of time following a major altercation with manager Domenico Tedesco, the always vocal Real Madrid No. 1 has made his return to the team for the first time since 2023.

In January, Tedesco was terminated due to a disastrous run, and Courtois has since returned to the team; however, not everyone is happy about this development.

Since then, Koen Casteels has withdrawn his application for selection and has launched an attack against Courtois. Casteels was the player who was selected to start for Belgium in 2024, which included the European Championships.

The shot stopper for Al Qadsiah made the claim that a significant number of the members of the national team squad “do not agree” with his return, and that Courtois has demonstrated “little guilt,” which indicates that it was inappropriate for the football association to encourage him to return.

Courtois expressed his regret for his absence during his first press conference for Belgium since returning for a Nations League double header play-off match against Ukraine. However, subsequent to his apology, he turned his back on Casteels.

He started off by saying, “I can understand Koen because he was number one and now I’m returning in that position.”

However, the football association sought my return from the very beginning, and as a result, I made myself available once more. It’s not like I was the one who planned all of this out.

The other things that he said, that there is even more dissatisfaction, are more concerning. I have no idea. In my opinion, if you are going to say something, you ought to also name it.

“There is no issue that I have with him. My issues were with a single individual, and not with any of the other players. The only thing I did was restate my availability.

“I have no idea what Koen is talking about when he says that there are still players who think in that manner. In point of fact, you ought to maintain your silence if you do not reveal the complete truth.

Youri Tielemans, who plays for Aston Villa, appeared to concur with Courtois’ account of the events, stating that he believed Casteels’ intervention was not particularly beneficial.

The midfielder gave the following statement: “We most certainly did not require that bomb from Koen in this situation.”

It was, without a doubt, brought up in conversation; however, the most essential aspect is that Thibaut was able to express his perspective and explain everything.

The most important thing is that he acknowledges that there were a few things that went wrong for the group of players, but that he has made it clear that he did not intend for it to be that way.

In the beginning, Courtois, who had previously played for Chelsea, removed himself from consideration for selection in the middle of an international break in July of 2023.

After some time had passed, he disclosed that the reason for this was Tedesco’s decision to not award him with the armband on his 100th appearance. Romelu Lukaku, who was also a vice captain, was the recipient of this honour.

“Obviously, I apologise for how it happened, they are still having trouble accepting it,” he said upon his return to Belgium, admitting that it was a mistake to abandon the national team without providing an explanation.

“I am able to comprehend the fact that there were fabricated tales, or at the very least, not the complete truth.

“It is difficult to change the opinion of the general public; the only way to do so is to continue to win competitions with the team.

My hope is that if we do that, the relationship will go back to how it was before, because I was always showered with a great deal of love.
