The first England squad that will be coached by Thomas Tuchel will be announced on Friday, but there are still a number of players who are eligible to switch their allegiance to another international association.
On January 1, Tuchel officially began his tenure as England’s manager. Currently, he is getting ready for his first training camp in preparation for the team’s first games at Wembley Stadium, which will be played against Albania and Latvia.
It has been reported that the former manager of Chelsea and Bayern Munich has compiled a shortlist of 55 players for the England national team. However, in order to select the initial squad, the list will need to be narrowed down to a total of 26 players.
As soon as the season begins, Tuchel will be faced with a number of challenging choices, and the decisions he makes will most likely have a significant influence on the futures of a great number of stars who still have the potential to play for a different country at the senior level.
There have been times when England has benefited from players like Declan Rice and Jack Grealish ultimately choosing to play for England; however, there are still players who could potentially pledge their allegiance to another team. Be sure to keep an eye on these ten things.
In Barbados, Myles Lewis-Skelly is named.
This season, the 18-year-old has developed into a player who is of tremendous importance to Arsenal. He has garnered comparisons to Ashley Cole, who is widely considered to be England’s greatest left-back in the history of the sport.
His most recent appearance for England was with the Under 19s in September, but he is eligible to play for Barbados, a country in the Caribbean. He has played for England at youth levels.
In Nigeria, Ethan Nwaneri is a
In a similar vein, Ethan Nwaneri is another Gunners wonderkid that is making waves, and fans are eager to see if Tuchel will be able to expedite his development. Although Nwaneri is a member of England’s squad that will compete in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2024, his family is originally from Nigeria. Although it has been reported that the most likely scenario would be for both Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri to be called up to the senior squad, it is not completely out of the question that they would be called up to the Under-21 squad.
In Jamaica, Mason Greenwood appears.
Mason Greenwood, a former forward for Manchester United, was not one of the 55 players that Tuchel personally contacted about the possibility of representing England. After playing for England at a variety of youth levels for a total of seventeen matches, the star player from Marseille made his only appearance for England at the senior level as a substitute in a Nations League victory over Iceland in the year 2020.
As a result of his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm, he has not been taken into consideration for selection.
The Criminal Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped the charges against Greenwood, and he continued his football career away from United by playing for Getafe on loan. In the summer of 2018, he signed with Marseille, a club that competes in Ligue One.
Apparently, Greenwood has officially switched allegiance to Jamaica and will be representing Steve McClaren’s side on the international stage, as stated by Mark Bullingham, the chief executive of the Football Association.
It was Scotland’s Archie Grey.
Grey may be in Tuchel’s thoughts as a result of his impressive performance while playing for Spurs since his move from Leeds United, which cost forty million pounds. Gray’s father, grandfather, and great uncle all played for the Tartan Army, and despite the fact that he played for England’s youth sides, Grey is eligible to play for the Tartan Army as well. Scotland will be waiting to see if he is selected for the team.
Scotland represents Elliot Anderson.
Elliot Anderson has been in excellent form for high-flying Nottingham Forest under the direction of Nuno Espirito Santo, who has stated that he “has enough talent to be regarded” for England selection. In a situation that is a carbon copy, Anderson has been performing exceptionally well.
Although he has not been awarded any caps at the senior level, the former Newcastle United midfielder has played for both England and Scotland at the Under 21 youth level. In August of 2023, he was called up to the senior squad of Scotland for World Cup qualifiers; however, he did not participate due to an injury, and as a result, his other options are still available.
For Scotland, Ghana, and Barbados, Jarell Quansah is the name.
The centre back for Liverpool was included in England’s provisional squad for the Euro 2024 tournament; however, Gareth Southgate decided to remove him from the squad when he named his 26-man squad. The fact that Quansah’s grandparents are from Scotland, Ghana, and Barbados makes him eligible to play for those countries.
Republic of Ireland’s Liam Delap is speaking.
In light of the fact that Liam Delap has had an outstanding season with Ipswich Town, during which he has scored ten goals in 27 matches, many people have predicted that he will be called up as an additional option in the attack. In light of the fact that Rory, the throwing specialist father of the former Manchester City player, was a member of the Republic of Ireland, Delap is eligible to follow in his footsteps if he does not feel a strong desire to play for the club.
Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who is also the brother of Three Lions and Real Madrid sensation Jude, is rumoured to be on Tuchel’s radar with regard to the possibility of calling up players from the Championship. Tuchel is believed to be open to calling up players from the Championship.
As is the case with his older brother, Jobe is qualified to play for Ireland because he has a grandfather on his father’s side.
Jamaica’s Omari Hutchinson performs.
The international situation of Omari Hutchinson, who is the second Ipswich Town star on the list, has been a roller coaster that has been quite unpredictable. Over the course of 2023, Hutchinson participated in two matches for Jamaica, but he declined additional call-ups in order to focus on his club football career.
The player, who had previously played for Chelsea and Arsenal, then accepted a call-up to the England Under-21 team and made his debut in August. It has now been reported that he has decided to play for the Three Lions, despite the fact that FIFA rules state that a player can switch nations if they have played no more than three competitive senior matches before the age of 21.
Ghanaian Callum Hudson Odoi is named.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, who just scored the game-winning goal against Manchester City, is another player who has a chance to be included in the England squad. These are just some of the possibilities. His first appearance for the senior team came in 2019, when he was only 18 years old, and it was against the Czech Republic. He went on to play for the team two more times before he was eliminated from consideration.
It appears that he is interested in joining his teammate Morgan Gibbs-White back in the England fold, despite the fact that he is still eligible to play for Ghana.
Hudson-Odoi commented, “I’m ready for whatever happens,” and she meant it.
“All I have to do is make sure that I am doing it for the club while I am out on the pitch.” The fact that they are present and observing us is evidence that we are doing something right, as evidenced by the fact that we are engaged in discussions or disagreements of that nature.
“It is imperative that we continue to have faith in ourselves and work towards accomplishing as much as we possibly can. It would be an incredible thing if the boys were selected for England, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for them.
