An obligation for Chelsea to purchase Sancho at the end of the season is included in the transfer of Sancho to Enzo Maresca’s team, as reported by the Mail. This obligation is contingent upon Chelsea finishing in 14th place or higher in the Premier League.
Due to the fact that the Blues are currently in fourth place, it appears that this will most likely take place.
The report, on the other hand, suggests that it is still possible for Sancho to return to United in the event that Chelsea fails to fulfil the obligation. However, this would result in a “significant penalty” for the clubs to pull out of the terms that were agreed upon between them.
It has also been reported that players typically discuss the terms of their loan agreement with a club before joining on loan if they intend to sign with the club permanently. On the other hand, it is common knowledge that Sancho does not fit this description.
The two choices that are still available are as follows: Chelsea can fulfil the obligation and then sell him to another club, or they can choose to send him back to United and risk incurring a financial penalty.
United minority shareholder Jim Ratcliffe asserted that United was still paying for Sancho, despite the fact that he had joined the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Sancho was one of the players that United was still paying for.
“I’ll give you an example, if you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we are buying Antony, we are buying Casemiro, we are buying Andre Onana, we are buying Rasmus Hojlund, we are buying Jadon Sancho [this summer],” Ratcliffe told BBC Sport on the morning of Monday.
“All of these things are from the past, but regardless of whether we like it or not, we have inherited them, and what we need to do is figure out how to deal with them. We are paying £17 million to acquire Sancho in the summer, despite the fact that he is officially playing for Chelsea and that we are paying him half of his wages. It is therefore necessary for us to take some time in order to transition from the past into a new place in the future.
During the summer of 2026, Sancho’s contract with United is scheduled to come to an end.
