Gary Neville has come under fire for his commentary following the sensational free kick that Bruno Fernandes took for Manchester United in their match against Arsenal.
In a move that went against the grain of the game, Fernandes put United ahead with a stunning dead-ball shot that went past David Raya just before halftime. This came after Alejandro Garnacho was fouled outside the box.
An exquisite effort that combined power and accuracy was produced by the United captain, which was successful in defeating Raya, who was unable to get across in time to prevent the fine strike from being scored.
Although Neville was providing commentary, he did not concentrate on the wonderful piece of quality that was being displayed. Instead, he took issue with Arsenal’s wall, which he believed was too far back and made it simple for Fernandes to score.
In addition, supporters of United took issue with his remarks and took to X to voice their disapproval of the Sky Sports pundit.
Someone posed the following question: “Is it possible that Gary Neville does not give Bruno any credit? He is only referring to the wall that Arsenal has constructed.
An additional contributor wrote: “Fair play to Gary Neville blaming the wall when David Raya gave Bruno half the goal to aim at.”
“When Gary Neville saw that glorious free kick in front of the Stretford End, his first thought was about the distance between Arsenal’s wall and the goal,” said a third person. It seems as though Gary requires a break from playing football.
A fourth individual made the following statement: “Bruno scores a free kick that is on par with Cristiano Ronaldo, and Gary Neville wonders how far back the wall was.” I can vouch that he has never played for us.
“All Gary Neville can say is that the wall was too far back!!” a fifth person vehemently responded. Have a day off, for crying out loud!
However, Neville did ask, “Can we put a measure on that?” despite the fact that he had stated that United would enter the halftime break with a sense of celebration after Peter Drury had described Fernandes’ heroics. It appeared as though that wall was located a great distance away. The majority of the time, you get – especially a large wall like that – it always appears to be really difficult to get it up and over, but there just seemed to be so much space.
After it was discovered that Fernandes was 11.2 yards away from the Arsenal wall, Neville doubled down early on in the second half by showing a replay of the first game. This came after it was revealed that the distance between Fernandes and the Arsenal wall was 11.2 yards.
