Jurgen Klopp ‘Rejected’ Erik ten Hag For RB Leipzig Managerial Job – Here’s Why

After starting work on January 1st, Jurgen Klopp is getting used to his new position as Red Bull’s Global Head of Football. Erik ten Hag, a former Manchester United rival, was reportedly rejected by the former Liverpool manager for the managerial position at RB Leipzig.

After being hired in 2022, Marco Rose is still with the Bundesliga squad, but with the team being in sixth place in the domestic league, a change is reportedly imminent in the summer of 2025. Additionally, they had a very poor Champions League performance, accumulating only three points during the eight-game league round.

Despite the possibility of losing their spot in the European tournament, Leipzig intends to continue with Rose through the end of the current campaign, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany. The German, who had oversaw Klopp’s former team, Borussia Dortmund, will have to be replaced.

Jurgen Klopp Draws Up Three-Man Shortlist

Erik ten Hag missed out

Before the 2025–2026 season, former Liverpool manager Klopp has been entrusted with creating a shortlist of possible successors for Rose, according to DaveOCKOP. The 57-year-old has reportedly ruled Ten Hag out of the running after being given the Dutchman’s name, choosing instead to work with three managers who understand German.

Klopp is believed to have a specific ideal candidate in mind for the next manager of RB Leipzig, and he doesn’t think the former Red Devils strategist meets that description. Both Klopp and Ten Hag had rather distinct playing philosophies while managing in the Premier League at the same time; the latter favoured possession-based football over Liverpool’s “heavy metal” style.

In his tenure at Old Trafford, Ten Hag managed 128 games and won 72 of them. On paper, his record appears to be good, but following an outstanding first campaign in the hot seat, things rapidly took a turn for the worse. In October 2024, he left Manchester with the team in the bottom half of the Premier League standings, and Ruben Amorim took his position.

Klopp reportedly limited down his search for Rose’s successor to Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace, Sebastian Hoeness of Stuttgart, and former Benfica manager Roger Schmidt after rejecting Ten Hag as a possible choice.
