Paul Scholes calls out Ruben Amorim’s defence of Alejandro Garnacho as red flag spotted in Real Sociedad draw

In the aftermath of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad, Paul Scholes criticised Ruben Amorim for his defence of Alejandro Garnacho, a winger for Manchester United.

As United prepares to play the second leg of their Europa League last 16 match, they will do so with the knowledge that a victory at Old Trafford will guarantee them a spot in the second round of the competition.

A strike scored by Joshua Zirkzee in the second half of the match in San Sebastian gave them the lead, and the fans lauded his performance for his contribution.

Nevertheless, United was unable to maintain their lead, as Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty kick after Bruno Fernandes committed a handball violation.

Even though Orri Oskarsson had the opportunity to win it for Sociedad in the final minutes of the game, he missed the post with his shot from eight yards out.

United had a number of chances at the other end of the pitch, but they were unable to capitalise on them, with the exception of Zirkzee’s goal.

In the 77th minute, Amorim made the decision to replace Garnacho with Christian Eriksen, who was the winger who had been playing.

The decision was met with a range of reactions from United supporters, with some expressing disapproval and criticism regarding Garnacho’s behaviour after being substituted out for the second match in a row.

Amorim voiced his support for the Argentine player and his own decision to replace him with another player after the match. He told the reporters, “I felt he was tired.”

As a result of the fact that we engaged in a great deal of transitioning in the second half, he was way behind in his defence. I had the impression that he was exhausted from having to recover and continue doing the same things.

Karen Carney, in response to Amorim’s remarks on TNT Sports, stated that fatigue “might have played a part” in Garnacho’s performance in the second half, and she also mentioned the tape that was wrapped around his knee.

Amorim’s defence of the winger, on the other hand, did not strike Scholes as particularly impressive. Scholes stated, “He appears to be sulking a bit.” I am not experiencing any symptoms of fatigue.

A little bit of dissatisfaction with Garnacho was on my part. As a result of the fact that his most significant strength is running through, he provides you with penetration; however, he was lacking in energy here tonight.

“I believe there is a little bit of sulkiness. Certainly, he will make a full recovery. And it is imperative that he improves his health because they do not have anyone else to turn to for assistance.

Old Trafford will play host to the second leg of United’s Europa League last 16 match against Sociedad on Thursday, March 13.
