Paulo Fonseca, the manager of Lyon, has been given a significant suspension as a result of his outburst that occurred during his team’s match against Brest.
As part of their participation in the Ligue 1 competition, Lyon played host to Brest at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.
Alexandre Lacazette, a former player for Arsenal, was the star of the show as he scored twice to seal a 2-1 victory for Lyon. Kenny Lala was the player who scored for the away team.
However, the victory was marred by the fact that Lyon manager Fonseca was dismissed for dissent after he appeared to shove his face into referee Benoit Millot. According to reports, this was interpreted as an attempt to headbutt Millot.
In an interview with the French news outlet L’Equipe, Millot described the incident as follows: “He jumped at me with an intimidating attitude, and I decided to send him off directly.” Continued to spiral out of control was the result.
The intensity of his demeanour was even greater, and he was actually making an effort to strike a blow. A blow to the head. Not even enough time had passed for me to make the announcement of the ultimate decision, which was that there would be no penalty handed down. To put it more precisely, it appeared as though there was a slight contact of the nose.
It has been reported by the Daily Express that Fonseca has been given a significant suspension at this time.
Up until September 15, the French professional league has prohibited Fonseca from entering the changing room before, during, or after matches.
In addition, the Portuguese has a touchline ban until November 29.
The president of the disciplinary committe, Sebastien Denuex, said: “The commission deplores that once again, a major player in Ligue 1 has adopted such behaviour and renounced a requirement and an ambition of responsibility. Mr Fonseca is a Ligue 1 coach. His primary role is that of a teacher. The fact that this attitude is completely incompatible with these functions is something that should go without saying.
“The committee found that Mr Fonseca’s attitude, throwing himself towards the referee, yelling at him, to the point that they found themselves head to head, is an attitude characteristic of intimidating and threatening behaviour.”
He continued by saying, “As a result, the committee has decided to sanction Mr. Fonseca with a suspension from the referee’s locker room and the touchline area until the 30th of November in 2025.” This sanction will also cover access to his own locker room before, during, and after the match until September 15, 2025. This is due to the fact that it also finds that this is a serious misconduct.
