When the Washington Commanders selected Dan Quinn as their next head coach during the offseason, they were well-prepared.
They destroyed the rival Dallas Cowboys in addition to bringing in a top-tier motivator and a successful team with Super Bowl experience. It took away their defensive coordinator — and several key contributors in the process.
Players who followed Quinn from Dallas to Washington include wide receiver Noah Brown, defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr., centre Tyler Biadasz, and edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. Now that the free agency landscape for this year is more defined, the Commanders may be interested in another former student of the coach.
With defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa’s four-year, $80 million contract extension, the Cowboys will have far less money to spend elsewhere. Cornerback Jourdan Lewis is one seasoned player they may have to let go. Up until 2025, the eight-year quality contributor has played his whole professional career in Dallas, but things could change.
The likelihood of landing for commanders Following Osa Odighizuwa’s extension, Jourdan Lewis gets better.
Beyond the obvious Quinn connection, Lewis would fit right in with the Commanders. With Mike Sainristil and Marshon Lattimore, a four-time Pro Bowler, likely starters, Washington doesn’t need another star in the secondary. With 2023 first-round failure Emmanuel Forbes Jr. now with the Los Angeles Rams and Benjamin St-Juste about to become a free agent, some depth could be helpful.

A player like Lewis would be perfect for that position. As a team’s No. 2 or No. 3 cornerback, the former third-round pick has shown to be effective. In recent years, Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland have eclipsed him in Dallas. However, with 71 tackles last season, he set a career high. Given his career status, he would probably also be reasonably priced.
Lewis is a player the Commanders should target because of all those factors. Washington’s intentions are further bolstered by Dallas’ financial difficulties and his prior relationship with Quinn.
As a seasoned player who understands his responsibilities, he would add much-needed depth to Washington’s defensive backfield. Almost ten years into his playing career, Lewis is still able to make a difference as an impact player.
A coach who was a locker-room favourite in Dallas (and still is in D.C.) would reunite with the Michigan product. For Commanders supporters, perhaps most significantly, he would give Washington more bragging rights as the team acquires another player from its fiercest rival.
Adam Peters, let’s make this happen. Lewis should (ideally) be a Commander shortly after the legal tampering window opens when free agency officially starts next week.
