Jonny Evans made a surprising start in Manchester United’s draw against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon and has expressed his opinion on Erik ten Hag’s status at Old Trafford.
Jonny Evans acknowledges that concern about Erik ten Hag’s position has weighed on the minds of Manchester United players following a “emotional” reaction against Porto.
The Dutchman is under intense pressure at Old Trafford after leading Manchester United to their worst Premier League start in history. It was believed that club officials gave him games against Porto and Aston Villa to save his job.
Ten Hag’s side was held to draws in both matches. They blew a two-goal lead in Portugal before scoring late on via Harry Maguire.
United followed it up with a scoreless draw at Villa Park. Evans also stated that Ten Hag had an emotional reaction to the midweek tie, and the players had been trying hard to change the tide.
Following Sunday’s match against Villa, the defender said: “You see the supporters at the end, the support they give the squad. They have generously sponsored the players throughout the years.
“It was wonderful for him to see that. He became emotional the other night, and you could see it on his face as he let the game slip away. “You could see everyone running into the ground to get a half decent result.”
He went on to say, “It affects the players. It’s on our minds, too. I believe the more experience I’ve had in my career, I’ve made sure I do all you do to be ready and contribute everything I can to the team.Evans was unexpectedly brought into the Red Devils’ lineup on Sunday and was named man-of-the-match for his outstanding performance. This was his first Premier League start of the season.
When asked about his comeback to the team, the Northern Irishman stated, “I still feel like I’m playing the game I always have, and I still feel like I have speed in my legs to get me out of bad situations.”
“[Erik ten Hag] told me after the game the other night that I’d play in this one.” Even in the match against Porto, I didn’t expect to start. It is doubtful that there will be a double center-back replacement. Every match I play now, I simply adore it. It is still an honor to play for this club. “The pressures that come with it are part of it.”
