Michael Owen has suggested that Manchester United winger Antony lacks the quality to prosper in the Premier League, despite his skill.
The Brazil international joined United on Ten Hag’s advice almost two years ago in an £85 million transfer from Ajax, but has failed to meet expectations.
Antony scored his first goal of the season in last week’s 7-0 EFL Cup win over Barnsley, although he has just played one minute in the league all season.
United manager Erik ten Hag has urged that the 24-year-old ‘earn the right’ to play for the club, but Owen believes the winger will never be able to justify his high price tag.
‘I haven’t seen enough positive performance from Antony since he’s been there to justify him starting every game for Manchester United,’ the former United striker told talk2soccer.com.
‘He’s obviously a really gifted youngster, and they’ve spent a lot of money for him, so they’ll be trying to get a song out of him, make him happy, and start him performing.
‘I just don’t see his skills being acceptable for the Premier League. I do not think he is swift enough. When he executes a trick, I don’t believe he has the explosion and speed to break away from a defender.
Antony was linked with a loan move in the final stages of the summer transfer window, but turned it down to battle for his spot at Old Trafford.
However, Owen feels that a fresh start may be in the Brazilian’s best interests if he is to reclaim the form that propelled him to prominence at Ajax.
‘He may be excellent in a different club, but this current Manchester United squad, granted, it’s extremely difficult for any player to truly shine, as we’ve seen with recent signings over the last five, or ten years,’ Owen added.
