Several former football players cast their votes to determine which of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had the superior career.
Once, a number of retired football players cast votes to determine which of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had a better career, with unexpected results.
Many people consider Ronaldo and Messi to be the two best players in history because of their outstanding accomplishments for their clubs and nations.
The two have shared the stage for over ten years, have won fifteen Ballon d’Ors between them, and have set several remarkable records that might never be surpassed.
Both are currently enjoying their last years outside of Europe in Saudi Arabia and the United States after facing off in the height of Real Madrid and Barcelona’s El Clasico rivalry.
Messi dominated for Barcelona for the majority of his European career before spending two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain and winning two more league titles.
On the international scene, he has led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, won the Copa America twice, and completed football.
Ronaldo has won league championships in three separate nations. He also experienced international success with Portugal in 2016 when they won Euros in France, even if they did not win the World Cup.
In a poll conducted by The Athletic, former players supported Ronaldo, despite the fact that the argument about who is the best is never-ending.
“Who has had the better career, Messi or Ronaldo?” was one of 35 questions in a survey that the outlet conducted in 2023 on a variety of subjects.
Ronaldo, a legend of Manchester United and Real Madrid, received 66% of the vote, while Messi received 34%.
Messi, however, won by a landslide vote of 72% to 28% when asked which of the two they would have preferred to have played.
In an interview with El Chiringuito to celebrate his 40th birthday, Ronaldo reiterated his claim to be the greatest, calling himself “the most complete player to have existed” and pointing to his stats.
Messi’s long-time teammate Javier Mascherano, who is currently his manager at Inter Miami, responded candidly to his remarks, though.
“Is Cristiano claiming to be the greatest and most complete player in history? I don’t need to evaluate Cristiano’s viewpoints because I greatly appreciate him. That’s his opinion,” Mascherano stated.
“I have my own thoughts and it isn’t that.”
