3 Fans Killed and 80+ Injured in Algerian Football Stadium Disaster

Three football fans were killed and at least 80 others injured in a horrible stadium accident in Algeria on Sunday, according to the Algerian Ministry of Health.

MC Alger fans were ecstatic after winning the top flight league title for the second year in a row, after earning the top spot with a draw against MC Magra, and players and coaches celebrated on the pitch as fans set off an array of green flares around Stade du 5 Julliet.

Amid the joy, calamity struck, with local sources claiming that a portion of the security barrier collapsed in the upper deck of the 64,200-capacity facility. El Heddaf TV broadcast footage of the tragic tragedy.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the dead’ families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the unfortunate incident. The nation’s Ministry of Health acknowledged three deaths in a Facebook post.

“The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured persons, with three fatalities. Ben Aknoun Hospital received 27 injured persons, and Bab El Oued Hospital received 16.

MC Alger took to Instagram to confirm the death of Younes Amguzzi, one of the supporters who fell into the bottom tier during the title-winning celebrations.

“It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands,” they wrote in a poignant tribute from club management.

“The board of directors, all members of management, all the team and players, come forward with sincere condolences and the most sincere condolences to all the family members of the deceased and their family.”

As of now, MC Alger has not commented on the other two reported deaths, and officials have yet to publish a statement regarding stadium safety standards.

According to Reuters and The Sun, several MC Algers employees and players raced to the hospital to donate blood to those injured. As expected, the club’s trophy-lifting scenes have been postponed.
