Summary
The Premier League continues to attract bright young players, such Adam Wharton and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have demonstrated that they have the potential to become world-class players.
Other thriving young prospects include Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall.
The Premier League has historically produced some of the world’s top footballers. Since its renaming in 1992, England’s top division has included stars such as Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and, most recently, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland. That is not to argue that the division just focuses on the biggest and brightest stars. English football has a long history of producing and developing some of the game’s best young talent.
Manchester United, Arsenal, and West Ham United have all been home to some of football’s most promising young players at various points in their histories. Despite the large sums of money that enter the tournament each season, clubs continue to invest in their future. The Premier League continues to be home to some of the next generation’s biggest names, whether via cultivating talent in their own development system or taking a risk by bringing in unproven youngsters with high promise.
We’ve pared down the Premier League’s best players aged 21 and under to a top 20. We considered what they have accomplished in their brief careers, their potential, and the prospects for development at their current teams.

20Mathys Tel, Tottenham Hotspur

Mathys Tel, a promising young man, was wanted in January. Unpopular with Vincent Kompany in Bavaria, the youngster was given the opportunity to acquire new techniques elsewhere. Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils team was interested, as was Tottenham Hotspur, and the latter won the tug-of-war for his services.
He has yet to make much of a goalscoring impact for Spurs, with only two goals and one assist in club colours at the time of writing – but, at such a young age, the raw Frenchman will need time, and, if he is given such promise by the north Londoners’ powers that be, he has every chance of becoming the next up-and-coming superstar.

19Abdukodir Khusanov, Manchester City

Manchester City’s Abdukodir Khusanov began off terribly, with his debut being regarded as one of the worst in football history. The Uzbekistan international committed an error that resulted in a goal against Chelsea, received a yellow card, and was substituted in the 54th minute. However, the defender’s situation has dramatically improved.
He is still young, however, and has plenty of time to hone his skills in England’s top flight. Having the opportunity to learn from players like as Ruben Dias and John Stones will help him improve as a player in the future, and Guradiola may have struck gold with the 21-year-old.

18Romeo Lavia, Chelsea

While on Southampton’s books, the ground-breaking Romeo Lavia appeared to be the next big thing, and he stood out in the club’s engine room with his energetic displays and rangy demeanour. Since coming to west London in the summer of 2023, the 21-year-old has yet to experience this.
Brussels-born Lavia, a once-capped Belgium international, is certainly a gifted central midfielder, but his full potential has yet to be realized, especially as the Blues continue to add fresh players to their engine room. Time will tell whether Chelsea’s investment was wise, but if he can re-establish his form from his St. Mary’s Stadium days, Enzo Maresca could have a world-class player on his hands.

17Andrey Santos, Chelsea

Rio de Janeiro-born. Last season, Andrey Santos demonstrated why he is such an exciting prospect in world football. Despite being only 21 years old, his midfield talent is highly regarded in international circles, as seen by his two caps for Brazil, and he should be able to establish himself in England’s top division.
He spent the second part of last season on loan at Strasbourg, where he established himself as one of Ligue 1’s greatest engine room destroyers. Chelsea are thought to be delighted with the youngster’s progress in France, but whether this translates into more minutes under Maresca will be an intriguing part of the current season.

16Yankuba Minteh, Brighton & Hove Albion

Yankuba Minteh has wasted no time in showing the Premier League what all the fuss is about. For obvious reasons, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United did not want to let their bright youngster go, but they were compelled to transfer him to Brighton in order to comply with the league’s profit and sustainability standards. And the Magpies are currently seeing the 21-year-old dismantle teams for someone else.
Starting slowly, he has now scored six goals and provided four assists for the Seagulls, and Minteh’s agile footwork and electrifying speed have caused clubs plenty of difficulties since his arrival on the coast. He could be the next jewel to emerge where Moises Caicedo, Alexis MacAllister, and others formerly developed their skill.

15Jorrel Hato, Chelsea

There’s a reason why Jorrel Hato was coveted by Chelsea and Arsenal before his move to the former, right? Born and reared in Rotterdam, the 19-year-old has emerged as one of the game’s most intriguing defenders. Hato’s versatility is particularly impressive, as he can maraud up the left while being defensively resolute.
Despite his young age, the uncapped Dutchman was crucial for his old club, Ajax, as proven by his 50 appearances in all competitions last season. If they were able to generate the same level of output for the Blues, they could have struck gold.

14Lucas Bergvall, Tottenham Hotspur

Lucas Bergvall, like Archie Gray (more on him later!), moved from Djurgarden to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2024, demonstrating that Daniel Levy and his entourage were investing more time and money into the exuberance of youth – and he’s started his career in north London reasonably well, playing the majority of games across all competitions.
Last season, Ange Postecoglou’s choices – or apparent lack thereof – caused the Greek-Australian boss a slew of headaches, so the young Swede was relied on more than expected, but that’s not to suggest he wasn’t up to the challenge. Instead, he’s handled it in stride and established himself as one to watch.

13Archie Gray, Tottenham Hotspur

Archie Gray, a highly rated central midfielder when on the books of childhood side Leeds United, was signed to give a layer of youth to their engine room – but due to a run of injuries to central defenders, the youngster has primarily played out of position.
With a mature brain on young shoulders, the versatile ace has demonstrated his ability to lead by example and perform effectively out of position despite his age. It is not unfair to argue that Gray, 19, will improve in the coming months if given the opportunity to flourish in his preferred position. His leadership abilities are already shining through, and the Tottenham Hotspur fans were impressed.

12Leny Yoro, Manchester United

The truth is that judging Leny Yoro in such a porous Manchester United backline may appear unfair, but much has been made of the fact that he is now the most expensive teenager in Premier League history, which comes with the burden of expectation – but that is part and parcel of being one of the most sought-after young players in the world.
However, the fact that United, who were managed by Erik ten Hag at the time, were able to outbid Real Madrid and Liverpool for his services should say a lot, and the rangy Frenchman impressed last season despite a poor start. Sure, he looks fantastic, but it remains to be seen whether he will be his club’s best substitute for Raphael Varane.

11Alejandro Garnacho, Manchester United

The Argentine genius has already had some memorable moments in his early career, including a late winner against Fulham in 2022, two goals that powered Manchester United’s comeback against Aston Villa a year later, and, of course, the Puskas-worthy overhead kick at Goodison Park.
With heavy competition on the wing, Garnacho has frequently had to be patient in his pursuit of a string of starts. Initially, his lively personality was a breath of fresh air in what has been a tumultuous time at Old Trafford, but things have soured, and he is searching for an escape strategy. Chelsea are interested in signing him, and he would undoubtedly be a great and exciting option for a Premier League club looking to finish in the top four.

10Lewis Hall, Newcastle United

Lewis Hall, who presently plays for Newcastle, has represented England’s youth teams from Under-15 to Under-21. Not everyone who comes through Chelsea’s youth gets to play for the first team, and the 20-year-old made 12 appearances before going on to pastures new, where he was promised more senior playing time.
As previously said, Hall desired consistent playing time, so when Newcastle approached him, he made an easy option. Eddie Howe has generally played him on the left side of defence, but his versatility means he can fill in wherever if the Magpies need him to – a valuable commodity indeed.
