Raheem Sterling being linked to a move to Celtic is one of the most unexpected transfer speculations that have surfaced in recent times. It is thought to be rooted in the Englishman’s and Brendan Rodgers’ previous relationship, since the two had a successful working relationship at Liverpool. It was during that time that he became one of the game’s top wingers.
However, Sterling is currently going through a difficult time. He is no longer training with Chelsea’s first team and has been shut out.
It is difficult to believe that too many clubs would be interested in signing him in January given these conditions. He would need time to catch up because he would not have played any football throughout the first half of the season. Then you take into account his recent lack of form.
However, Football Insider claims that Celtic can only sign Sterling from Chelsea if they are able to pay his salary. According to Pete O’Rourke:
“Raheem Sterling’s enormous salary is the issue with him and any possible departure.
He still earns ยฃ300,000 a week, which makes him, in my opinion, Chelsea’s highest paid player. Celtic will never come close to matching those salaries.
They could likely only help with a tiny portion of it as well. If Raheem Sterling is completely shut out of the game at the moment, how long will it take him to catch up and be prepared to play regular first team football?
Since his stint at Arsenal last season, which didn’t go well even then, he hasn’t played any football. Therefore, I would argue that Raheem Sterling moving to Celtic is quite doubtful at this time.
Raheem Sterling can only be signed by Celtic on one condition.
There is no possibility that Celtic would be able or willing to pay Sterling’s whole Chelsea salary. Therefore, no transaction will be made if it is the deciding factor.
According to some reports, Celtic may be willing to pay him around ยฃ50,000 a week, which is a small portion of what he gets at Chelsea. Nevertheless, it is still preferable to nothing.
Sterling would also get the opportunity to play regular football, something he hasn’t done in a long time, if he were to sign a loan deal with Celtic. Chelsea would also benefit from the move, as it would increase their chances of finding the winger a new home come summertime if he can regain his form. Therefore, taking into account all the advantages, maybe a compromise may be found at some point, and a move can occur. However, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon for the time being. That’s just the way things are.
